SO, HERE’S THE STORY –
Far too often, actors when in a rush to get things going, will hastily jump into action, proclaiming, “I need (new) pictures!” They then ask around for a ‘good photographer,’ compare some looks and prices and schedule a photo-shoot. The date arrives and they head into the shoot with some sort of vague idea of what they want (or should have). Or, they have no idea at all, expecting the photographer to make it all happen for them.
It’s great to be proactive about your career, however, being unprepared for photo-shoots are one of the biggest mistake that actors can make, again and again and again. They go into their shoot hastily and wind up with anything but the best shots possible. NOT SMART! It’s foolish, time-consuming and expensive. THIS PHOTOGRAPH DETERMINES WHETHER YOU DO OR YOU DON’T GET TO PERSONALLY MEET CASTING DIRECTORS, AGENTS AND MANAGERS!
A good headshot should last years! A bad headshot can also last years! After all, who wants to admit that the shots they just wound up with really aren’t that good? So, then that actor will use the (not so good) shots until they’re ‘used up’. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?! It’s just plain crazy!
DON’T MISS A SINGLE OPPORTUNITY! YOUR HEADSHOT IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PRECISION TRADE TOOLS YOU HAVE AS AN ACTOR. GO INTO YOUR PHOTO-SHOOT PREPARED AND READY TO GET THE BEST SHOT POSSIBLE!
“My previous headshots were great but I needed to update them as they’d been seen all around town for 5 years. After getting coaching from Clay, I ended up with so many great shots it was hard to narrow them down! If you’re debating whether you should do this or not… I’d say it’s more than worth your investment.” ~ Mike Chubb (actor)
Think about it. Actual scenes aren’t shot without direction – why would you think still-shots should be any different?! They’re not! A photoshoot needs direction! So, you say, “That’s the photographers job, isn’t it?” Yes and not really! The photographer can and will only do so much. The photographer’s job is to get you a shot that’s ‘photographically’ correct, by working with location, lighting, wardrobe, angles etc. And, even if they work with you during the shoot… the majority of the success of the shoot is ultimately on the shoulders of the actor.
“I shoot thousands of actors’ headshots all over the world and I can always tell when an actor’s been coached by Clay. They come in prepared, knowing exactly what they’re doing. As a result, I’m able to get so much more out of them and their shots end up looking amazing! It also makes my job much easier! “
~ Halstan Williams (veteran headshot photographer)
WHY HEADSHOT COACHING?
Private Photo-shoot Coaching is professional one-on-one coaching where I take the actor through every facet of the photo-shoot process leaving them with complete confidence, strong understanding, and no guessing! As a result — we wind up with KILLER SHOTS! Every time!
Below are just a few examples of what’s covered in a one-on- one Headshot Coaching Session:
• What type of shot are you looking for? Are you sure? Why do you think so?
• Does that look presently exist anywhere in film or on TV?
• Are you going for a look that is actually YOU or just an idea of you? Do you know the difference?
• Your character development matters.
• Wardrobe – What works for you – What to stay away from – Do your choices compliment your eyes or pull focus from your face?
During the actual shoot:
• Techniques that give you confidence and strength and have you looking sensational!
• Playing music on set — knowing what music to play.
• Where you actually place your focus when looking at the lens makes a big difference?
• Are you looking at them or are they looking at you? What this means.
• Not getting stuck between frames and winding up with shtick.
• Your inner dialogue and the difference it makes for a killer look!
Once the shoot is over:
• What now?
• Who should I share my photos with? Why family doesn’t count.
• Who’s opinion should I trust? (See above)
• What should I do with the ones that I like? (retouching, printing, uploading, sending)
This process, when done correctly, takes some time to complete. Remember, preparation is 86.5% of every job. So, be sure to schedule your headshot coaching session several weeks before you think that you’d like to shoot… not after the date has been set.
EFFECTIVE HEADSHOT SESSIONS REQUIRE PROPER PREPARATION!
Do this correctly the first time and you will wind up with that killer shot you can’t wait to show everyone!

“Clay took me to a whole new level in my preparation for my shoot and the results are in the photos. I feel that anyone who is going to take time, effort and money to get new headshots would be foolish to not coach first.” ~ Collin Sutton (actor)
“I had no idea what I was doing! I didn’t know what I wanted or needed out of the shoot… but I knew I needed help before I stumbled blindly through that process again. Coach Banks worked one-on-one with me to help me figure out exactly what my goals were for the shoot, giving me exact practical instructions for how to achieve them. By the time my headshot appointment came around I was so organized and focused that the photographer said I was the most prepared actress she had ever worked with… and then gave me some extra pics (looks) just for fun.” ~Lauren Schoepher (actor)
“I’m so glad I finally took the plunge and got HEADSHOT COACHING with Coach Banks. It was well worth it!” ~ Graham Jones (actor)
