This is how most of us have come to like and even expect things. “I want it, and I want it NOW”! This isn’t a problem with some things… but it is a HUGE ISSUE with others… such as your own CAREER STRATEGY. Check this out:
I want to go to HOLLYWOOD and become a STAR! I have to save up just enough money to move to LA. I’ll find a place to crash for a while (I know a friend from college who lives there… somewhere). Then, I can locate a photographer, get some head shots (who cares if they’re not the best), take some CASTING DIRECTOR workshops while looking for an AGENT. Only to wait around in one of the million-and-one COFFEE SHOPS in town HOPING and PRAYING something happens… and soon! I’ll take anything that shows up (because I want to be a WORKING ACTOR… NOW!)… trusting that whatever shows up will take me where I want to go (but I actually don’t have a clue where that really is.) STEP & REPEAT
I have a dream of becoming a WORKING ACTOR. I research my options and decide on HOLLYWOOD (better weather than NY — lower rents as well). I create a plan of attack and go to work on getting myself prepared for this NEW and EXCITING next phase of my life. I find out where I’d like to live — based on affordably, location to studios and casting offices (and maybe some friends who might already be there). I keep at my plan all the while saving up enough money for at least 3-6 MONTHS if not 1 YEAR of living expenses in the overly expensive state of CALIFORNIA.
When everything lines up, I make the move! Once I’m settled into my new digs, I begin my ON-CAMERA TRAINING. After all, I know it only makes sense to place PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT before LABELING & ADVERTISING… and I’ve already researched the best places to study. Remember… I want to work on-camera in FILM & TV, so I’m gonna study working… ON-CAMERA!
Now I’m all set up in my new CREATIVE HOME! One of the SOCIAL CENTRAL EPI-CENTERS of my new CREATIVE LIFE… MY ACTING STUDIO! I study, make new friends, network, learn and grow. Great all around support as well. And, under the guides of my wise and experienced COACH, I develop my skills and strengths until we’re all in agreement that it’s time to GET OUT THERE. Finally, but worth the wait — because I now have QUALITY PRODUCT! And CRAZY STRONG SKILLS!
I follow this PROCESS learning each level of the craft and move forward at the pace my TALENT and ABILITIES will allow. No further! (Even when everyone else is doing it!) I keep my DREAMS ALIVE as to what I’m believing for (working my goal sheets) — being extremely careful not to get AHEAD OF MYSELF. All the while keeping STRONG, PRESENT and in the NOW! I learn from each job I do. I work out my characters and scenes in my ACTING CLASSS (not in front of a casting director) and strategically build my own personal FAN BASE of INDUSTRY PROS… because I’M GOOD and I KNOW WHAT I’M DOING (and I’m not talking just #s on FACEBOOK either).
I stay careful not to overly SELF PROMOTE, posting image after image of me on RED CARPETS (that are nothing more than 20 ft of rented red runners and a few stanchions) for some insignificant little project that’s being made out to be THE ACADEMY AWARDS! I mean… isn’t that what we used to do as children?? Play MAKE BELIEVE? Forget that nonsense! I’ll celebrate in proportion to the successes of the milestones I’ve achieved and the goals I’ve laid out for myself… not despising the little things or small beginnings — but also not making them what they’re REALLY NOT. I’ve got my head screwed on straight! I’m a PROFESSIONAL BUSINESS PERSON working in the profession of SHOW BUSINESS!
I do what I know to do… staying thankful and appreciative for what I’m able to do — developing my INSTRUMENT, LEARNING MY CRAFT in sync with my ability to deliver the PROFESSIONAL GOODS. I’m also careful not to get caught up in my own SELF ENTITLEMENT… promoting myself into areas that I’ve made important so that I seem (and look) important… when in reality, I’ve decided it all myself. I keep good sense about myself in perspective to where I am and what I’m doing. I create opportunities by becoming the BEST I CAN POSSIBLY BE! STEP & REPEAT
You be the judge. Which scenario makes more practical sense? There are SUCCESS STEPS that are needed to be taken in most everything and in most every industry. Why would you think it would be any different in the ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY? Don’t skip steps just because you’re in a hurry. Be smart and efficient over the LITTLE THINGS in your life and all that is on your path.,… and don’t despise your SMALL BEGINNINGS. EMBRACE THEM! They will all add up to everything you put into them. And, keep in mind… not everyone who wants to act will have a CAREER, let alone, wind up becoming a MOVIE STAR. It just doesn’t happen that way. However, success minded individuals, people who patiently PLAN THEIR WORK and then WORK THEIR PLAN — will more often than not experience EXCITING and FAVORABLE RESULTS!
Get your PRODUCT right. Don’t skip steps. And after it’s (you’ve) been trained and tested… then bring it to market! Patiently keeping your eyes on the little things GRASSHOPPER’S! Feed them well.
It only makes sense!
