In Coach Clay Banks’ latest Youtube video, he covers what to look for when you’re shopping for a new acting class. There is a lot to watch out for in an acting class audit. You want to find a place where you can get maximum use out of your time. See as many classes as you can!
First you want to check out the studio online and see the information you can find about the coach, what students are saying, booking testimonials and the reviews. You can learn a lot by the feedback from an acting coach’s clients.
Once you decide to check a place out, check in with the commute on your way there. Where is the studio? What’s the area like? Is there free parking available? These things may seem trivial at first, but if you are looking to drive to class every single week, they are important to take into account.
Sense the feeling of the studio when you’re arriving. Are you being welcomed into the environment? Does it feel “guru-y” or cliquish? Chat with some students before class and hear their experience in the class.
Once you’re in the class, check out the equipment. For an on-camera acting class, it is important to be actually training on camera. Is the equipment getting the job done, and are students getting their footage back at the end of class?
How do you feel about the coach? Do you feel like you are being talked to, talked with, or talked at? Are you learning and growing during the audit? Don’t just enjoy yourself. When you’re there you should be checking in with yourself throughout about how you feel about the teaching, not just zoning out into it.
Ultimately, when you find the right class, you will know. When you’re shopping for a class you are looking for a professional environment where you can plant yourself and flourish into the best actor you can be. Don’t stop until you find your place.
