Far too often, actors (when in a rush to get things going) will hastily jump into action, proclaiming, “I need (new) pictures!” They then ask around for a ‘good photographer,’ compare some looks and prices and schedule a photo-shoot. The date arrives and they head into the shoot with some sort of vague idea of what they want (or should have). Or, they have no idea at all, expecting the photographer to make it all happen for them.
It’s great to be proactive about your career, however, being unprepared for photo-shoots are one of the biggest mistakes that actors can make, again and again, and again. They go into their shoot hastily and wind up with anything but the best shots possible. NOT SMART! It’s foolish, time-consuming, and expensive. THIS IS THE PICTURE THAT DETERMINES WHETHER YOU WILL OR YOU WON’T GET TO PERSONALLY MEET CASTING DIRECTORS, AGENTS, AND MANAGERS!
A good headshot should last years! A bad headshot can also last years! After all, who wants to admit that the shots they just wound up with really aren’t that good?
DON’T MISS A SINGLE OPPORTUNITY! YOUR HEADSHOT IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PRECISION TRADE TOOLS YOU HAVE AS AN ACTOR. GO INTO YOUR PHOTO-SHOOT PREPARED AND READY TO GET THE BEST SHOT POSSIBLE!
IT JUST MAKES SO MUCH SENSE
Think about it. Actual scenes aren’t shot without direction – why would you think still-shots should be any different?! They’re not! A photoshoot needs direction! So, you say, “That’s the photographer’s job, isn’t it?” Yes and not really! The photographer can and will only do so much. The photographer’s job is to get you a shot that’s ‘photographically’ correct, by working with location, lighting, wardrobe, angles, etc. And, even if they work with you during the shoot… the majority of the success of the shoot is ultimately on the shoulders of the actor.

WHAT’S COVERED?
Below are just a few examples of what’s covered in a one-on-one Headshot Coaching Session Package:
Session 1
Preparation:
• What type of shot are you looking for? Are you sure? Why do you think so?
• Does that look presently exist anywhere in film or on TV? Look for it!
• Are you going for a look that is actually YOU or just an idea of you? Do you know the difference?
• What story are your face and eyes telling? Your character development matters.
• Wardrobe – What works for you – What to stay away from – Do your choices compliment your eyes or pull focus from your face?
Session 2
During the actual shoot:
• Techniques that give you confidence and strength and have you looking sensational!
• Playing music on set — knowing what music to play.
• Where you actually place your focus when looking at the lens makes a big difference?
• Are you looking at them or are they looking at you? What this means.
• Breathing.
• Not getting stuck between frames and winding up with shtick.
• Your inner dialogue and the difference it makes for a killer look!
Session 3
Once the shoot is over:
• What now?
• Who should I share my photos with? Why family doesn’t count.
• Who’s opinion should I trust? (See above)
• What should I do with the ones that I like? (retouching, printing, uploading, posting, sending)
This process, when done correctly, takes some time to complete. Remember, preparation is 95.5% of every job. So, be sure to schedule your headshot coaching session several weeks before you think you’d like to shoot… not after the date has been set.
EFFECTIVE HEADSHOT SESSIONS REQUIRE PROPER PREPARATION!
Do this correctly the first time and you will wind up with that killer shot you can’t wait to show everyone! As well as, many others to spare!
